All the Books I Wrote
The books for which I was primary author, primary editor, or
both, include:
- ABN AMRO North America Internet Web Style Guide--Detailed
information on the styles used for the Internet web sites for
ABN AMRO's North American subsidiaries. This includes specific
pixel widths and positioning, specific HTML hexadecimal codes
and Pantone® Color Management System numbers
for colors, and specific phrases and typography. (AITSC-Doc-Internet-SG-1.0)

information suitable for giving business users for the various
types of security available (from no security through SSL and
encryption strength, both for intranet and Internet web sites).
Written for the non-technical audience, this book allowed the
business user, or customer, to make a cost-benefit analysis
for the security of their web site in an informed manner.
(This book was never completed or released.) (AITSC-Doc-Web-XG-0.9)

configuration and operation instructions on how to use Netscape
Navigator, which was the (proposed) standard web browser for
the Bank. It included specific URLs and detailed explanation
of the various options (later, preferences) the user could
control. (AITSC-Doc-Web-UG-1.1)
- ABN AMRO North America Web Server Installation &
Configuration Guide--The detailed procedures for installing
a new web server, from unpoacking the hardware to installing
the packages, and configuring the Intel and Windows NT based
web server, including both standard components (like the web
server itself) and optional components (like Perl and a news
server). (AITSC-Doc-Web-ICG-1.2)

Guide--Some tips and techniques for troubleshooting
web-related problems, including both the client and the server,
both hardware and software. Intended for the Help Desk personnel
when web browsers were rolled out to all North American employees.
(AITSC-Doc-Web-TG-1.1)
- ABN AMRO North America Web Style Guide--Detailed
information on the styles used on the primary intranet web
site. (The styles for the intranet server in question are
virtually identical to those on this site. This should not be
surprising, as that intranet web site was developed wholly by
the same person who designed this web site.) (AITSC-Doc-Web-SG-1.1)

for the Hewlett-Packard PA-RISC chip set through CXSOFT, the

releasing it, with all appropriate documentation (such as
Release Notes, Installation Procedures, User's Guides, and so
on). (no part number)
- How to Run a Field Test--Based originally on a coworker's
document, this book discussed how a field test of CONVEX software
should be coordinated, with specific action items for various
types of software. (700-047530-000)
- Meta Series Pre-Installation Checklist--When CONVEX
released the first Meta Series rack-mounted cluster systems to
the field, we included this checklist for the Field Engineers
so they knew how to install the machine. This included site
preparation as well as post-installation configuration of the
cluster. (no part number)
- Motorola Systems Administration--A 282-page reference
tome on how to administer and support user and administrator
accounts, hosts, and applications for the 1,200 users, 300
servers, and 1,500 client workstations in the Worldwide System
Development Division. (no part number)
- NCC Fortnightly Reports--From October 1994 through
January 1995, provide the statistical summary of NCC operations
every two weeks, highlighting important issues or recurring
problems. The report was circulated throughout senior management,
internationally. (no part number)
- NetCortex Operator's Guide--Detailed instructions on
how to configure and use NetCortex, a network monitoring software
package then in use in the NCC. (no part
number)
- Network Control Center (NCC) Five-month Summary of
Operations--When the NCC had been in Chicago for five
months, we summarized the entire period in a single report.
We provided bullet lists of urgent problems and graphs indicating
the number of calls into the NCC, the number of problems resolved
before a call was placed, what equipment was at fault or what
human error precipitated problems, and so on. Like the NCC
Fortnightly Reports, this went to senior management
internationally. (no part number)
- Network Control Center (NCC) Operations Handbook--Detailed
policies and procedures for the Chicago-based Network Control
Center (NCC). This included general instructions for
troubleshooting, problem solving, using the major utilities,
and places to look for additional specific information. (no part number)
- Networking Services Glossary--The precursor to the online glossary on these
pages, this glossary was originally part of the System
Administration Tool Kit (SATK) User's Guide. It provided
definitions for all the networking and telecommunications
terminology in use by the Network Engineering and Systems
Administration staff, so the two groups could understand each
other better and bring new employees and contractors up to
speed quickly. (no part number)
- PRTSMail User's Guide--In up to five editions (the
first four were only used inside the company), it documented
the user interface to the Problem Report Tracking System (PRTS),
which later became part of COBRA. It informed the user how to
format a message for e-mailing to CONVEX that would run a query
against the database and return all matching entries. The book
also described what the result e-mail would look like and what
the fields meant. This book first shipped to customers with
ConvexOS V11.0. (DSW-600; 700-044030-000 through
-004)

200-page book documenting the various tools, policies, and
procedures involved in the development, engingeering, and
production networks at the Bank, from the point of view of the
Chicago operations team. (no part number)

Operations Guide, the three editions of this book provided
the TAC C-Series administrator with detailed instructions and
step-by-step procedures in performing tasks to maintain the
systems in compliance with corporate policies. (700-047730-000 through -002)
- Technical Assistance Center (TAC) Tape System Cheat Sheet
and Support Document--In three editions, document which
utilities (ansitar, cpio, dump,
pax, restore, & tar) work with
what types of tape (9-track, 3480 square tape, 4mm digital
audio tape (DAT), & 8mm EXABYTE tape), whether in single-
or multiple-volume tape sets, and using ANSI labeling, IBM
labeling, or no labeling (unlabeled), as well as the various
command line arguments for the utilities so users could do what
they wanted. The book was intended for internal use only, but
we wound up mailing it to customers with many tape issues, as
well as providing copies to any customer taking the System
Administration course through our Education Center. Documentation
Services used this book to revise the customer tape documentation
set. (700-025330-000 through -002)
- TAC Utilities User's Guide--In three editions, this
book documented the various internal-to-the-TAC utilities we
used to support customers. It was intended as a learning aid

personnel who only occasionally worked War Room (front-line
support) shifts. (700-045030-000 through
-002)

- Tivoli Security Guide--A summary of the various Tivoli
products' security features, co-opting text from the Tivoli

information on the products without providing a complete set
of documentation or making them learn the details of all the
products. (no part number)
