Josh Work Organizations Professional organizations

I am or was a member of several professional organizations (listed in alphabetical order):

Either select an organization from the list above or scroll through this page.

HTML Writer's Guild

The HTML Writer's Guild is an organization dedicated to strict quality of HTML coding and web page design. It is the world's largest international organization of Web designers with over 70,000 members in more than 130 nations worldwide. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in web authoring and a desire to improve his or her skills.

League of Professional System Administrators

The League of Professional System Administrators is an independent organization whose mission is to advance the practice of system administration; to support, recognize, educate, and encourage its practitioners; and to serve the public through education and outreach on system administration issues.

LOPSA was created in 2005 when the USENIX President apparently unilaterally, and without censure from the Board, ended negotiations to spin SAGE off into its own organization, since USENIX and SAGE/LOPSA have different if complementary goals.

LOPSA remained a sponsor of the annual Large Installed Systems Administration conference, discussed below, until that conference ceased operations.

LISA FKA SAGE

LISA, formerly known as the System Administrators' Guild (SAGE) was a Special Technical Group within the USENIX Association. In late 2011 the name was changed to LISA, to reflect the better-known conference name; the SIG was dissolved at the end of 2016, having been superseded by the annual LISA conference and LOPSA. It is dedicated to the recognition and advancement of system administration as a profession.

I've been involved in several SAGE-sponsored conferences like LISA, the Large Installed Systems Administration conference held annually.

1997 A member of the Program Committee for the September 1997 LISA conference in San Diego, California.
1998 Advisor to the Practicum Track subcommittee at the December 1998 LISA conference in Boston, Massachusetts.

Chairman of the SAGE Outstanding Achievement Award selection committee.
1999 A member of the Program Committee for the November 1999 LISA conference in Seattle, Washington.
2000 A member of the Program Committee for the December 2000 LISA conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Member of the SAGE 2000 Nomination Committee, which nominated candidates for the 2000/2001 general SAGE Executive Committee elections.
2001 Chairman of the SAGE Outstanding Achievement Award selection committee for the December 2001 LISA conference in San Diego, California.
2002 Appointed to the SAGE Executive Committee to fill vacancies from others' resignations.

Member (and later Chair) of the SAGE Online Services Committee. Responsible for quality assurance for the new SAGE static and dynamic web sites.

Executive Liason to the Mentoring Project.

A member of the Program Committee and the SAGE Executive Liason to the November 2002 LISA conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A member of the SAGE Outstanding Achievement Award selection committee.
2003 A member of the Program Committee for, and paper presenter at, the October 2003 LISA conference in San Diego, California.

Chairman, SAGE Online Services Committee.
2005 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the December 2005 LISA conference in San Diego, California.
2007 A summarizer for several workshops and technical sessions at the November 2007 LISA conference in Dallas, Texas.
2008 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the November 2008 LISA conference in San Diego, California.
2009 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the November 2009 LISA conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
2011 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the December 2011 LISA conference in Boston, Massachusetts.
2012 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the December 2012 LISA conference in San Diego, California.
2013 Submitted a paper (which was not accepted) to the November 2013 LISA conference in Washington, DC.
2014 An external reader/reviewer for the Program Committee for the December 2014 LISA conference in Seattle, Washington.
2017 A reviewer of proposed talks and tutorials for the October 2017 LISA conference in San Francisco, California.
2018 A member of the content committee for the October 2018 LISA conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

LISA was not held in 2020 and was held virtually in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the conference ceased to exist in August 2021.

I also scribed various LISA and USENIX Annual Technical Conference sessions for ;login, the USENIX Association newsletter.

In addition, there are also several local SAGE groups. When it originally existed, I participated in the Chicago local group, chigrp. In April of 1999, I presented a talk at chigrp about writing an abstract or technical paper that may be of interest. A friend and coworker presented a revised version of that talk in March of 2000 at the Twin Cities Systems Administration (TCSA) SAGE local group.

My conference reports are also available. This includes several sessions, talks, and workshops I've written up for publication in ;login:, including the Advanced Topics Workshop (ATW) from 1999 to 2014 (its last year).

USENIX Association

The USENIX Association is also known as the UNIX and Advanced Computing Systems Technical and Professional Association. Since 1975 the USENIX Association has brought together the community of engineers, system administrators, scientists, and technicians working on the cutting edge of the computing world.

My conference reports are also available.
