Cranbrook Kingswood School

I moved from Roeper to Cranbrook for the seventh grade (effective September, 1980), and was there through my senior year of high school (June, 1986). The Cranbrook Educational Community includes a coeducational elementary school (Brookside), segregated-gender middle schools (Cranbrook for boys, Kingswood for girls), and a combined upper (or high) school (Cranbrook-Kingswood), as well as a graduate-level college Art Academy and Art Museum and the Science Museum.

Courses

Cranbrook is a college preperatory school in suburban Detroit, Michigan. In addition to the expected classes — English, History and Political Science, Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, & Physics), Music (chorale and instrumental), and Fine Arts — there were some unexpected courses (including but not limited to Economics, Geology, Ethics, Religion, Earth Science), athletics, including both varisty and intramural programs, and other disciplines as well. Cranbrook attempts to provide a well-rounded education for its students and encourages cross-discipline programs.

Cranbrook was very big on Advanced Placement (AP) classes. In my tenure there I took six exams for five classes:

Cranbrook didn't explicitly offer a class for the AP English exam, but the reading for the class, subtitled "Western literary Traditions," included the Oedipus trilogy, Virgil's Aeneid, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, Shakespeare's Hamlet, several of Shakespeare's Sonnets, Melville's Moby Dick, and Lord Byron's Don Juan, among other works.

Combined, the six AP exams got me 26 college credits and waived my college foreign language requirement, a term of calculus, and the entire introductory Physics sequence.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Because all work and no play makes Josh a dull boy, I also participated in several extra-curricular activities, including:

• Computer Department Award for Prize Programs — For my work junior and senior year helping the Central library staff, and for extra project work from Computer Science classes, I was awarded the Computer Department's Prize Program award in 1985 and 1986.
  
  
• Computer Team — I participated on the Computer Team for four years and was captain in my senior year. The Team would participate in programming contests, having to complete four specific programs within an allotted amount of time.
  
  
• Cum Laude — I graduated cum laude based on my junior and first-semester senior year grades.
  
  
• Finalist, National Merit Scholarship Program
  
  
• Swim Team — My first three years of high school I was on the varsity swim team. I dropped out senior year because of the time commitment of being captain of the Computer Team.
